What is Hope?

For centuries man has misunderstood or misinterpreted many words in God’s Holy Scripture. “Scholars” debate the meanings of Biblical words and we must determine whether such interpretations are errors or truth. If errors, whether they are accidental or deliberate. Let’s take the wonderful and exhilarating word “Hope” and see if we can understand it. Of course this writing will be an abbreviated explanation of the word but it is a start.

One may say, “I hope it will not rain today.” “I hope my car will start when I have an emergency.” “I hope my children will grow up to be great citizens.” “I hope. I hope. I hope.”

The standard dictionary definition, and one that is generally accepted by most of the world is “to FEEL that something desired MAY happen:” The words “feel” and “may” are two very indefinite and vague words, but such a definition of “hope” exemplifies the thinking of most people.

The dictionary definition of the word “hope” is NOT the Biblical Hope of which we speak.

Let us investigate the Old and New Testament meanings of the word “Hope.”

Psalm 33:22

“Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.”

Hope in this verse is the Hebrew word, “yachal” meaning “trust.”

Psalm 130:7

Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption.”

Again this is the same Hebrew word, “trust.”

Psalm 39:7

“And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.”

Here we see a slightly different Hebrew word towcheleth but with the same root but meaning “expectation.” These and many, many more verses illustrate the Psalmist’s reliance upon the trustworthiness of the Lord. The Lord CAN be trusted. He WILL keep His promises.

Now, in the New Testament we see the word “Hope” in several verses. This word “Hope” is an absolute, a guarantee without a doubt. It is the Greek word “elpis” meaning “to expect or anticipate with pleasure.”

Romans 5:2

“By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

We rejoice in the glory of God, not with uncertainty but with joyful anticipation — guaranteed.

Colossians 1:5

“For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

The Hope of Heaven is not a maybe — but an absolute and definite guarantee by the Word of the Truth of the Gospel.

Titus 1:2

“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;”

Eternal life — guaranteed and promised by the God of the Universe. He cannot lie.

Titus 2:13

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”

Every believer in Jesus Christ may look with confidence to the glorious appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ. No doubt!

Titus 3:7

“That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

We are Justified by God’s grace, guaranteed — Rendered innocent or free by God’s Grace, eternal life guaranteed!

As you read this, I want you to have that Hope or guarantee personally. God offers you this by His Grace.

Just briefly, no one deserves to live in Heaven or have eternal life with the Righteous God (Revelation 21:27). We are all sinners by nature and deed. Simply put, we have all sinned and come short of the mark of God’s righteousness (Romans 3:23). All sin requires a payment that must be paid — and that penalty is spiritual death, being apart from God in Hell (Romans 4:23).

By God’s Grace and Love He provided a Sin Bearer in the person of Jesus Christ who was crucified for our sin, was buried and rose again. This Grace is available to the whole world — including you personally (John 3:16). It is not determined by how good you are — or how hard you try — or by your good works, but by Grace alone, which means “undeserved mercy.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

How can we KNOW that Hope is real?

1 John 5:13

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may KNOW that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

You can KNOW. God promises Heaven, the Hope (guarantee) of eternal life is when you trust that Jesus paid the death penalty in your place. He promises — and all you need do is to trust Jesus as your Savior. Believe His Word — He died for you.

If you have never trusted Jesus alone as your Savior, do that right now. Believe His promises of eternal life which are yours the very moment you trust Jesus as YOUR Savior.

Remember and believe this:

Jesus died — That is history. Jesus died for ME — that is salvation.

When you make that simple decision, your eternity in Heaven is secure in Jesus Christ. It is God’s guarantee, thus your HOPE of Heaven is guaranteed eternal. You are immediately declared righteous before a Holy God with no possibility of losing His Gift of salvation. Eternal life is ETERNAL — without end, beginning the moment you trust Christ as your personal Savior.

Romans 1:16

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek [gentile].”

Please, trust Jesus Christ as your Savior NOW! God has no strings attached! Claim that wonderful HOPE.

  3. How, I enjoyed this article, about the Hope we have in Him! This website has been such a blessing to me, and by extension, as I have passed on what I learn. Thank you for carrying on in Jack’s place and keeping this crucial place of truth about God’s word going since the passing of Jack. He is missed, but the site remains faithful to carry on the work of the Lord, and Jack has left it in good and faithful hands. You all are reaching as many people who are willing to examine what God’s word truly says with humbleness. God bless all of you at Expreacherman.

  4. Erick,

Welcome, we are happy to have you here at ExPreacherMan.

Thanks for your question, it was answered in a Biblical context in the article with this verse:

“By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Romans 5:2

That verse is speaking of a Biblical Hope for those who have, by Grace through Faith believed in Jesus Christ alone for their eternal life.

If you are speaking of hope in a secular sense, i.e. “I hope it does not rain today,” it takes no faith to hope that way because it is not a matter of Biblical faith.

    I “hope” this helps.

  5. Question: In order to have Hope, do you first need Faith?

  19. Welcome Akinyemi!

Thank you for your message of encouragement for us to continue to present the simple clear gospel message that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ Jesus alone (Ephesians 2:8-9). Simple, straightforward and clear, that is what we aim for, at Expreacherman.com, in presenting the message of hope in Christ alone. You are correct in your assessment that many false, works-for-salvation “gospels” are being presented out there, inside and outside of the churches.

By the way, Jack’s article “What is Hope?” continues to be our best-viewed post with people seeing it from all over the world. Thanks, Jack, for your most helpful article.

  20. Akinyemi Akinsanya

I titled this comment as ‘GOD IS WATCHING’: This kind of messages and exposition has been so rear in our so called myriad of christian ministries, looking at that we still discover that many philosophise and translate Scriptures in their own way, God is watching, He sees all and we cannot deceive Him with our jamboree. Once again I commend your effort for this message of Salvation.

  21. Thank you John for your kind words; you have been such an asset and a blessing to the ExP readers; and thank you Jack for your powerful article that has been used so mightily by the Lord to reach thousands worldwide.

  22. Matt,

Thanks for that explanation and the verses to accompany it. Excellent.

  23. Matt for Grace and Truth

Biblical hope means “confident expectation that a good future event will occur.”

Faith, hope, and love are distinct yet interconnected (1 Corinthians 13:7, 13:13; Colossians 1:4-5; 1 Thessalonians 1:3, 5:8; Hebrews 10:22-24; 1 Peter 1:21-22). Faith in the finished work of Christ (John 19:30) takes care of the past sin problem (Romans 3:25). Hope takes care of future worries because we are going to heaven (Colossians 1:5) and will be like Jesus (1 John 3:2-3). With the past and future dealt with, we can focus on the present to love (Galatians 5:14). Love God (Deuteronomy 6:5; Mark 12:30). Love people (Leviticus 19:18; Mark 12:31). Do those two, and you have fulfilled the entire Bible (Matthew 22:40). Meanwhile, from now to the day we die, we trust God’s promises (Romans 4:13, 4:16, 4:19-21; Hebrews 6:12) to supply all our need (Philippians 4:19) and to work all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).

  24. Bruce, I have never read so clear a discussion of 1 Corinthians 13 as you gave above.

    Thanks. John

  25. Dorothy,

Thanks for dropping by and commenting. The true meaning of Biblical Hope is amazing, isn’t it?

Your question: “We were trying to better understand why ‘Hope’ remained since when we reach eternal life – Hope is achieved?”

You are right, when we arrive in Heaven, our Hope (joyful expectation / God’s guarantee) by God’s Word has been delivered.

    As we examine the verse:
    1 Corinthians 13:13
And now abideth [remains] faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity [agape love].”

The “And now” I believe, is speaking to believers in our present day life [Verse 12]. Thus we are still expecting with joy, God’s guaranteed promises of eternal life.

Let’s look at your other statement: “some were saying Hope in this verse is the same as Faith.”

The word “hope” can, in some circumstances, carry the meaning, “faith” but since the word “faith” [Gr. pistis] precedes the word “hope” [Gr. elpis] in that verse, my best understanding is that the Apostle Paul under inspiration of the Holy Spirit would not have used the word “faith” redundantly.

I pray this helps shed light on your questions. If you have further questions, please ask.

    In Jesus Christ eternally, Jack

  26. Welcome Dorothy! Thanks for joining us today.

Jack’s article has touched the hearts of thousands of people. In his article he emphasizes that hope (elpis in Greek) refers to the confident assurance that believers possess through having placed their complete trust in Christ Jesus alone for their salvation. I think that a good parallel text for you to read would be Romans 5:5-9 “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”

Faith and hope are not exactly the same concept. I would say that 1 Corinthians 13 tells us that because of the love of God (agape) we can be saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ Jesus alone. It is proper for the text to say that the love of God is the greatest of the three, faith, hope and love, because through God’s love and sacrificial gift of his son sent to die for us on the cross, we can trust in him by faith and then experience the resulting hope of salvation. To reiterate, as a result of trusting in Christ alone through faith in him alone (the gospel message of 1 Corinthians 15:1-8), then, as a result, we now have the hope (the confident assurance) of eternal life in Christ Jesus.

  27. I enjoyed your overview of the word Hope!

Our small group recently got into a discussion about 1 Corinthians 13 – specifically the last verse “…Faith, Hope and Love, but the greatest of these is Love”. We were trying to better understand why “Hope” remained since when we reach eternal life – Hope is achieved?

We were discussing some of the different Greek definitions and some were saying Hope in this verse is the same as Faith.

What are your thoughts regarding the use of the word Hope in this text?

  28. Greetings Jerry!

Thank you for joining our discussion fellowship today. Please come back often.

    Thank you.

  33. Thanks Bruce,

God’s Word is truly eternal, amazing and fulfilling when taken truthfully and in context. Your definition of “faith” is certainly accurate.

  34. Tremendous article Jack! I had looked at it a long time ago but revisited it today and I enjoyed it again.

Hope is truly an exclusively Christian term. I don’t believe that any non-believer (in Christ) can ever really experience hope.

Perhaps a good sister article to this one could be entitled, “What is Faith?” My own brief nutshell definition would be along these lines, “Faith is the title deed to the hope which is the exclusive possession of the believer in Christ.”

    Bruce

  35. Tsega, Thanks for visiting.

Our salvation, rescue and hope are all based upon putting our faith in Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, that He died for us, rose again and is alive today.. Belief in Christ alone secures all those things for you.. but without placing one’s faith in Jesus Christ alone, there is no eternal hope at all, only eternal condemnation that we all deserve.

    In Jesus Christ eternally, Jack

  36. May God Bless you. I was reading Psalms 62.5. I was going through some things in my life that had me looking for hope in wordly things i.e medication, friends…(but the true hope is God). As I read this verse, God was speaking and telling me that my hope…as you sayed- expectation…must come from God. The God that loves me (all of us). Some times when we feel like we are all alone, all that God wants from us is to acknowledge that he is in control and we want Him to take over and we will wait expecting our salvation / rescue from Him.

    May God Bless you!

My 16 y/o son died 24 years ago. 5 years ago my husband was stabbed by a poacher on our property and left for dead. Due to several miracles – unbelievable miracles he survived. It’s been 5 years but we still have nightmares. I am finally crawling out of the pit of fear & terror. My blog has helped me do that. http://macymemoirs.blogspot.com.

  52. I have been so blessed by the message on hope, it has enlightened me and helped me with the message God has impressed upon my heart.
Thank you and God bless you.

  53. Ow-Jay,

    Thanks for your question.

Biblical hope is based on our faith and the assurances of God’s Word.
Many times the word faith can be substituted for hope.. but must be read in context as in Romans 8:24.

    Psalm 31:24
“Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.”
That word “hope” can be translated as “trust.”

    Thanks for your interest.

    In Jesus Christ eternally, ExP(Jack)

  54. Thanx man for such a wonderful delivery of the word of God. Most of us our having the zeal for God but it is not based on Knowledge. God richly bless for spending your time to expantiate the biblical kind of hope. I just want to know the kind of hope used in Romans 8:24 which says for we are saved by hope, is the bible using the Hebrew kind of hope (trust). And what is the relationship between faith and hope

  55. Wally,

    Thanks for stopping by.

We are more concerned with believing and agreeing with scripture than we are with agreeing with me.

But yes, what you say is true.

However, Loving others is accomplished when we share Jesus Christ with them. NOT sharing Christ is not true love at all.

The Name of Jesus is Jehovah Yeshua, Jesus saves..

    In Jesus Christ eternally,
    ExP(Jack)

  56. I have continued studying Hope. I agree that Hope is to trust God. I found that my trust in God has increased by obeying the Word of God by loving God and my neighbor. When I did, God honored my efforts and granted me answers to my prayers as stated in John 15:1-17. By applying the Word correctly (loving God and man) and having received answered prayers. I now trust the Word and God more. This trust is the hope I have in Him.

The Bible calls hope the anchor of our soul. I think that there is an owness on us to build our hope by practicing our faith and receiving answers to prayers. It we are not receiving we need to doo something different. An anchor is like a root. We need to build on the foundation Jesus laid of loving others and laying doen our lives for others. When we do we have what we ask for in the name of Jesus. (John 15:1-17)

Do you have a similar teaching on faith? In my studies, I have found that faith is believing the truth. As we know Jesus is the one and only son of the one true God. We know this because His Word foretold of Him and what He would do. The Word so accurately described who He was and what He would do that there is no possible way that He could be anyone except the Messiah. That is why Peter said that the cripple in Acts 3 was healed by faith in the name of Jesus. I think you could rewrite this “by belieiving the truth about the name of Jesus” It is when we rightly divide the Word of truth that we have what God provides. Does this interpretation at all agree with you and your spirit?

    God bless you!
    Wally

  57. Hi Wilma,

    Thanks for your kind words..

Ex? I am retired from an active, organized ministry… however I do share Jesus Christ with everyone I meet if possible. Once a Preacher, always a “Preacher” as we follow God’s Word.

It is often difficult since I am infirm, almost blind and more or less confined to home.. That is the main reason for my Blog.. Reaching people for Jesus Christ.

The Lord has been gracious to us and we enjoy and try to live by His Grace.

    In Jesus Christ eternally,

    ExP(Jack)

  58. God bless you. One of the best explanations/study I have heard. Why are you referred to as Ex?

  59. Again–excellent post.

    Thanks!

    Russ

  60. Joey,

Glad our post on Hope could benefit you. We must remember God’s Word is the real source of truth.

I’m not sure what a “a healing, pushing-through service” is. We are instructed to pray for and comfort the sick but God heals according to His will. There are times when God does not want us to be physically healed.. and we cannot force His will.

The symbolism of the egg and the cross may take away from the simplicity of the Gospel Message, however. True, our only Hope is Jesus Christ and that is a good point.

In any service, we should make sure that we present Jesus Christ clearly as the only way of salvation and the only mediator between God and Man — there is no other. No church, preacher, Pastor or leader can remit our sins or give us salvation. Only by trusting Jesus Christ and Him alone as our Savior.

Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, died for the sins of the entire world, all of them. He was buried and rose again — to be seen of many.. He is the only salvation provided by God to man — to anyone who will trust Him alone as their Savior..

Please let me know what questions that were raised but not answered.

Praying for you in your ministry, Joey.

    In Jesus Christ eternally,

    Exp(Jack)

  61. JOEY WEISBAUM

Hi Pastor. I am a Parish Nurse in Dunnellon, Fl. and I am planning a healing, pushing-through service on nov.1 , All Saints Day. The theme is on Hope. You have answered many questions for me you also helped me raise some questions. I am praying for the Holy Spirit to guide our service. I am planning to end the service with the people coming to the alter and there I will have a white plastic egg with HOPE painted in gold on the outside and a wooden cross on the inside. This is to remind them that Jesus is our HOPE and you can n ot have hope without HIM. Thankyou again and Blessings to you and your family…Joey

  62. Thanks Wally,

Hope is gained by trusting Jesus Christ alone as one’s Savior, by Faith. First faith in Jesus, then God’s guarantee.. One who has not faith in Christ has no eternal hope!

    Hope is God’s guarantee..

    In Jesus Christ eternally,

    ExP(Jack)

  63. I read your answer to “what is hope” I liked it. Can you tell me, how do you build up your hope? And in the Bible, are there different words for the hope you get from having received from God, a past experience (or is that hope? maybe it moves from hope to faith), and the hope we have of things to come, going to heaven someday?

    Wally Pipp

    God bless you!

  64. We are doing a kids bible camp and I just wanted to tell you that this article helped me understand more of what hope truely is..and It helped me explain it better to the kids! So thank you very much! Never thought about hope too much untill now..but very good points about what the world says about hope and what Gods definition is
    Thanks!

  66. Diane,

    Thanks for stopping by..

Aren’t you glad when you see the word “Hope” in the Bible that it has God’s absolute guarantee behind it?

What a wonderful Savior we have!
    He is our only Hope.

    In Jesus Christ eternally,

    ExP(Jack)

  67. Thank you for a very well written article. This really gave me some anchors to hold on to. Thank you for showing clearly the difference between human hope and Godly hope.

  68. Thank you for this great study!

  69. Thanks Heather,

    Glad you have that “hope.”

We are guaranteed that “hope in Heaven” the moment we trust Christ as our Savior… and it NEVER ends. Eternal!

    In Christ eternally,

    ExP(Jack)

  70. Heather Dean

I know I have a “hope in Heaven”. thank you Lord

  71. Marty,

    Thanks for stopping by,

You will notice that I removed your primary web site link — because we do not advertise businesses.

You are welcome to use any of my stories or quotes as long as you attribute them to ExPreacherMan and give my Blog location link.

My first suggestion is that you emphasize the Gospel of Jesus Christ… because without a person trusting Christ, there is NO HOPE.

    In Christ eternally,

    ExP(Jack)

  72. hello,
i am starting a website called yeshope com. it is not published yet. i am wondering if you would allow me to use some of your experiences and words of wisdom on the website…plus, we would be blessed even more if you would add to our website with a true story of someones hopes that came through. our website is going to be focused on those who have, or are going through a very hard time in their lives… for persons that have no hope in sight….hoping to lift them out of thier pit and show Gods mercy and love, so they can “push-on” with the life that God would want them to lead….ultimately for Him…for God. I myself have been in such a “pit”, and told our lord that I would spread His word of hope and faith and love…in the hopes of bringing peace back to someone before they give-up. I am just starting this website, by myself and any help from you or others who have true stories to tell, plus words of wisdom…would be deeply appreciated. I hope to make this website well known over time…but not for my glory (as I will not mention my name) but only for Gods glory and others who need words of encouragement. Thank you for any help you may offer.
    Marty

  73. G’day Dominic,

    Good explanation of secular hope..

But that differs from my treatise on Biblical Hope.. which is a guarantee.

    Thanks for stopping by.

    In Christ eternally,

We often hear people say, “I hope that …..” Sometimes it is a sincere hope, like the hope that the money to pay for the mortgage comes in on time so your cheque does not bounce. Sometimes it is the hope of somebody you love getting better and not passing on. Other times it is futile things that don’t really matter like, hoping that your next door neighbour invites you to his party or that the bridge isn’t too crowded so you have to wait a simple 5 minutes. There is a true hope and there is a futile hope that really isn’t a hope at all, just a desire for instant or even delayed gratification.

  75. TMW,

What can I say but AMEN!

Excellent, ExP! That is the Hope I have! I await it in joyful, trusting expectation! It is too big to contain in my own life, it spills over into others. Since it is based on the ONLY ONE who can be trusted, the ONLY ONE who CAN perform it, I have no doubts! That is my Rock that keeps me safe and secure against all storms! I can rest, because my HOPE never slumbers or sleeps, HE stands guard over me and I can’t help but rejoice!
Good morning, G*D bless and Maranatha!
